Something you may have heard in the last few years is "gut microbiome" or "gut health." These terms are interchangeable. Not all of you know what it means. I wanted to take this time to address it, as it is an important part of your health and wellness. In this post you will learn what a gut microbiome is and steps you can take to help it and feel better!


What Is A Gut Microbiome?


Your gut (stomach and intestines) is filled with small microorganisms that help you digest your food. These are mostly bacteria (yes you are filled with different bacteria). The bacteria in your gut help you digest food and absorb necessary nutrients so your body can function. These are also involved in controlling (or not) your metabolism and body weight. The bacteria can also affect your mood and brain functions. So it is important to have a healthy microbiome.


Signs of Bad Gut Health


There are many ways that having poor gut health can affect you. Here are some things to be on the lookout for.

  • Regular Upset Stomach/Stomachaches

  • Sleep Disturbances or Fatigue

You can take steps right now, today, to improve your gut health. Some of these you may need help with, other ones you can try immediately.


  1. Take a Probiotic - these can come in pills or you can get the healthy stuff from yogurt

  2. Stay Hydrated - drinking water can help balance out the pH (acidity) in your gut

  3. Get More Sleep - sleeping helps your gut recalibrate a balance

  4. Lower Your Stress Levels - you can add exercise or enjoyable experiences

  5. Eat Slowly- you can improve your digestion by eating more slowly and let the little bacteria do their jobs

Now What?


You don't have to do all these things at one time. The best way to go about this is to find one thing and work on that. Once you have one thing down, find another one. The great part is that you get to choose!
