A Quick Guide to Dietary Supplements

Writer's picture: Dr. Joel SpringDr. Joel Spring

If you are at all like me, you take a few dietary supplements. Over 55% of people take at least 1 form of supplement! This number increases as you age. There is nothing wrong with dietary supplements. In today's world it is hard for you to eat a balanced meal. With a lot of processed food being consumed. Even the bread we eat today is different than the bread our parents and grandparents ate. Because of this we may fall short with some nutrients.

What Supplements Should You Take?

Before I give you the list of what to consider. Take a look at what you are eating. It is possible you are getting enough of the following vitamins and minerals already.

It is also really difficult to overdose on vitamins and minerals. Your body is exceptionally good at getting rid of extras.

Please consult with a nutrition coach, doctor, or other health care professional before supplementing vitamins or minerals.

The short list:

  1. A multivitamin - You can find these in most stores. You should do your research on which one is best for you. They can be formulated based on sex or age.

  2. Vitamin D3 - This vitamin is low in a lot of people. Chronic low levels have been linked to MS. If you don't get a lot of sun, a supplement may be right for you.

  3. Fish Oil - Most diets lack the necessary quantities of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids. These are heart healthy!

  4. Probiotics - Gut health is important. A quality probiotic can help balance your gut biome.

  5. Magnesium - 80% of adults have a magnesium deficiency!!!

  6. Tumeric/Curcumin - Helps to fight inflammation.

Rules For Supplementation

I generally give people only a few guidelines to follow when supplementing.

  1. Have regular blood tests to make sure you aren't supplementing too much.

  2. Try your best to get the nutrients you need from food

  3. Use only as necessary
