Alcohol's Effect on Your Energy

If you are like me, you like to share a drink with your friends or in celebration. Before we get into how alcohol can effect your energy, I want you to know that I think it's okay to drink in moderation. I just want you to be aware of some of the side effects.

Alcohol

Alcoholic beverages are an important part of many celebrations. It can be associated with relaxing and having a good time. It has been around for thousands of years. Alcohol can be okay. But it can effect your energy levels. If you notice that you aren't as energetic, alcohol could be part of why.

Alcohol and Your Energy

Increases Depression

In your Freshman health class you may have learned that alcohol is a depressant. This means that it reacts with your brain and other parts of your body to reduce arousal and stimulation. Over time, the decrease in dopamine and serotonin can cause lasting depressive feelings.

Reduced Reaction Time

Alcohol slows down the messages to your brain. This makes you slower to react to things. This is why it is not recommended to operate heavy machinery (automobiles) while under the influence.

Impairs Your Judgement

Alcohols effect on your frontal cortex makes it more likely for you to make bad decisions. After you sober up, you may have feeling of depression about the poor decision you made while drinking.

Reduces Inhibitions

Related to other issues, inhibitions can be lowered. Your slower reaction time may make it so you don't feel the anxiety associated with certain situations. The poor judgement may take center stage when you do make a decision.

Raises Blood Sugar

As alcohol is a simple carb, your blood sugar will increase making you more lethargic.

Leads to Dehydration

Dehydration is one of the leading causes for lack of energy. Alcohol makes your kidneys work hard to get it out of the system increasing the amount you urinate. This can lead to you being dehydrated.

Reduces Melatonin

Reduced melatonin flowing in your body can change or affect your circadian rhythm. This controls when and how you sleep. You can also see this effect in people that work late nights or graveyard shifts.

Conclusion

Alcohol can affect your energy. Used in moderation, the effects are minimal and can be reversed. It is okay to have alcohol from time to time. There are some health benefits shown in moderate amounts of alcohol. Just be prepared for how your energy will suffer following a night of drinking.
