Common Causes of Foot, Ankle, or Calf Pain

A lot of you have pain in your feet, ankles, and calves. The question I get a lot is why? Well there are many factors. In this post you can see the most common reasons for pain in these areas. I will add some others at the end that are pretty common. If you have a reason that is not listed here, please let me know!!

Most Common Causes/Reasons for Foot or Ankle Symptoms

Plantar Fasciitis - This is an inflammation of the fascia at the sole (bottom) of your foot. It connects from the heel bone up into the base of your toes. It is usually caused by a big change in your activity level. Find out more here or here.

Sprains - A sprain involves the joint. It can cause damage to ligaments. Ligaments connect one bone to a neighboring bone. Rolling your ankle or hyper extending a joint can cause ligaments to become sprained.

Strains - A strain involves muscles. A muscle strain can happen to any muscle that is pushed beyond it's limits. It can be from over use, or pushing too hard. These are common in your calf and your foot.

Tendonitis - This is an inflammation in the tendon (which connects your muscles to your bones). Tendonitis is usually an overuse injury similar to plantar fasciitis. Unlike a muscle strain, the symptoms will generally be closer to your joints.

Arthritis - Arthritis is a change in joint space. It is often defined as changes in the space between bones or "bone-on-bone." Arthritis is normal age related changes. Generally it is a symptom of something else going on. It is not considered a cause of symptoms, but a symptom itself. Almost always, there is something causing your arthritis that can be treated to decrease your arthritis symptoms. I call arthritis "wrinkles on the inside." The wrinkles that you get in other spots don't cause pain, but the mechanism of acquiring wrinkles and arthritis is the same.
