I am not writing this blog to tell everyone to get vaccinated for the COVID-19 virus. I am writing to compare the known benefits to having the vaccine. You can decide for yourself what you want to do.
The COVID 19 Virus
This is the first, and hopefully the last, pandemic in most of your (mine included) lifetimes. We have been dealing with it for over a year so far. The full effects of COVID may not be known for many years. We do know that it has severe effects for many including lung issues, heart issues, and even death. As of this writing, over 465,000 Americans have died from COVID and over 2.3 million people worldwide. This virus is contagious.
Healthcare professionals and experts have recommended social distancing and wearing face masks. Most of you have been doing so since last February or March. Good Job.
We are all getting tired of facemasks!!
We want to spend time with our friends and family, go on vacation, and return to normal. These masking measures have helped (when followed).
The virus is very contagious. If you get infected, you are likely to infect many more people than if you had a flu virus. The infection rate is what makes this virus so vicious.
So far it has been brutal for everyone. Life has changed. We need to do something to get this under control. A step in the right direction is to get the vaccine!
I Was Vaccinated!
On January 9th, 2021 I received my first dose of the Moderna vaccine for COVID 19. A day later I had a sore arm that lasted for about 24 hours. Then it was back to normal. On February 6th, 2021 I received my second dose of the Moderna vaccine. For me, it was the same experience. For others they have a stronger response to the vaccine and may develop a fever or other flu-like symptoms.
Key Points About the Vaccines
The two vaccines currently approved for use in the United States are similar. These are the Phizer and Moderna vaccines.
They both use mRNA.
mRNA stands for messenger ribonucleic acid.
mRNA does not change your DNA. It sends messages to certain parts of the body to create antibodies for the spiked proteins on the COVID virus (see the picture above). It tells the body to create a defense for the spikes. Then it goes away.
They both require 2 doses to be as effective as possible
They are injected into muscle tissue
The needle is really small (too small for a microchip)
The Pros to Getting Vaccinated
It will help control the spread of the COVID virus.
You will not get as sick if you catch COVID
More businesses will be able to open and operate fully
You are less likely to die from COVID
The Cons to Getting Vaccinated
For now:
You still have to socially distance
You still have to wear masks
Your arm will hurt
You may get a fever
It's hard to make an appointment
Who Should Get a Vaccine
Everyone!
