What is a Daily Movement Practice?

Movement Practice

A movement practice is not like a workout or a fitness regiment. It is a way to check your body and see where you are. You can self identify if you want to make improvements or maintain where you are at. A movement practice is basically going through the motions that your body is capable of. You can squat, roll your ankles, move your arms over head, or move your neck around. If you do this daily, and one day things are different, you will know. You will avoid the time when your heard your parents say "one day i couldn't get off the floor." You will know when that is coming. More importantly you will know when it's time to fight it off and do something (if you aren't doing something already). It's okay to grunt to get up off the floor by the way.

Example of a Movement Practice

In this video, we show you a few moves that we like to do. Joel B. Spring, PT, DPT shows that he moves all the joints in his body to end range:

This video is not what you have to do. Everyone is different. If there is an area that you feel tight in, do more for that joint and musculature.

How Often Should You Perform a Movement Practice?

It is really up to you how often you do this. We do recommend that you shoot for daily, but doing it 5 days per week should suffice. It needs to become habit. It is easiest, and most beneficial to perform a movement practice first thing in the morning. You can think of it as a jump start to the day. You get blood flowing to the body and your heart rate goes up. Both help you wake up and will help you increase energy throughout the day.

5 Benefits From A Movement Practice

These are listed in no particular order. Each one builds on the other so the cumulative effect is even greater.

  1. Feel Better

  2. Get Loose

  3. Lubricate Joints

  4. Increase Mobility

  5. Increase Energy

So go get to it. Try doing some movements throughout your whole body. Try and get every joint moving. Try to stay active. If you need help, reach out to us in the comments or at 425-202-5687 or info@bodyfixpt.com.
