What is a Hernia?

A hernia is simply defined as either an organ or fatty tissue that protrudes through a muscle or fasica. There are a lot of different types of hernias. We are going to focus on the most common ones that also can refer pain to the back or cause pain in your low back.

Inguinal Hernia - Intestine or bladder protrudes through the abdominal wall. It is near the inguinal ligament which is in the inner groin area.

Umbilical Hernia - Small intestine passes through the abdominal wall near the belly button.

Hiatal Hernia - The upper stomach protrudes through the hiatas (opening in the diaphragm)

All hernias are caused by a combination of pressure (lifting too heavy, coughing, or constipation, etc.) and weakness in the area. Being overweight, having poor nutrition, and smoking can increase the risk of hernias.

Identifying a Hernia

Symptoms of Hernias may include low back pain, the feeling of a lump in the region that may disappear when laying down, discomfort or pain around the lump (if there is one), and heartburn or chest pain.

I think I have a Hernia, Now What?

With Hernias, it is important to get them identified sooner rather than later. If they are not addressed there can be some serious complications. We recommend going to urgent care if you are also experiencing nausea, fever, or sudden pain with the other hernia symptoms. Some minor hernias can be fixed with the right nutrtion and exercise program, but it is important to monitor your symptoms throughout.

Sometimes surgery is necessary if the hernia gets bad enough. We want all of our patients to not require surgery which is why it is so important to address symptoms at the onset. Please reach out to us if you have any questions about your symptoms and we will help guide you on the proper steps.
