Metabolism Doesn't Get Worse as You Age


Yup, you read that right. A new study found that your metabolism doesn't get worse due to your age (until you are over 60). You can read a pretty good summary of the research on CNN's website here or the full article published in Science here (it is behind a paywall however).


This "new" discovery talks about how are lifestyle changes as you age have biggest effect on your metabolism.


Most of you were pretty active as kids and teenagers. In college, a lot of you probably studied more and partied hard. Thus the decline began


When you get a job, you are probably tired all the time. Decreased sleep, worse food, alcohol, and others play the largest role in the decline of your metabolism.


What Can You Do About Your Metabolism


The recommendations to increase your metabolism are still the same as they always have been.


  • Exercise - Five four-second bursts of exercise every hour can increase fat metabolism by 49%

  • Sleep - Getting less than 7 hours of sleep can have a detrimental effect on your metabolism, not to mention other health issues associated with lack of sleep

  • Nutrition - Increasing your protein intake can increase your body's ability to metabolize fat!

  • Hydration - Drinking a half liter of water can increase metabolism by as much as 24% for an hour.

Now pick somewhere to start. Take baby steps to increasing your metabolism!
