It's Okay to Be Wrong

Have you ever been wrong? Does it feel bad to be wrong? Well it shouldn't. In this post I'm going to tell you some of the benefits of being wrong. I struggle with this as I'm sure many of you do. I am not saying to always be wrong, but I want you to be able to recognize when you are wrong so you can take advantage of some of these positives from being wrong.

You Don't Have to Always Be Right

It's the way of the world. You and I don't know everything. I try to learn everyday! When I make mistakes, I try to learn from them for the next time. It is difficult. When you are defending a position, it takes a lot of core belief from you to defend that position. It is hard to understand the other side. Sometimes you may just make a mistake. I want you to know that it's okay.

The biggest step you have to take is recognizing when you are wrong!

What You Can Learn When You Are Wrong

There are a few things that can turn being wrong into a positive! And that's great news. Here are some of the things you can take advantage of when you are wrong!

  1. Learn Something New - Maybe you didn't know what you were getting into when you were wrong. Once you can accept that you are wrong, you can learn the other person's side, research more information, or learn to do something in a different way. There are many ways to be right and wrong.

  2. Check Your Ego - Sometimes your ego is why you defend your position. When you let your pride and ego go, you can get along with people that have a different opinion than you. You will also be able to calm yourself down and things won't feel like such an attack

  3. Open Yourself Up to New Experiences - Maybe you mistakenly thought something wouldn't be fun. So try new things. You may enjoy them, and if you don't, well you tried. Being wrong about hiking or CrossFit, or anything else doesn't make you a bad person. But before you say you don't like something, you should give it a good, honest try!

  4. Check Your Bias - We grow up learning things from our environment and our families. Sometimes you become biased towards one way of thinking or living. That is okay if you can recognize that you may disagree with someone and the world won't end. People around the world, just like you and me, have lived differently and have different principles that may not match up with yours. That's okay, as long as they are not committing any crimes.

  5. Be Open-minded - The more you start to recognize that most areas are grey and not black and white, the better you will be able to understand other peoples thoughts and ideas. It can help you grow as a person, husband, wife, leader, or in your profession. Always consider advice, this doesn't mean you have to take it.

Final Thought

Accepting you are wrong is difficult. It attacks your soul and core beliefs. I struggle with this regularly. I love to be right. For my work I have to be right more often then not. But it is okay to learn from every time you are wrong. Maybe you can change the way you do something. Maybe you can even find a better way that is an overall improvement.

This is difficult to do and requires active work and focus on being okay with being wrong from time to time.

I am not going to say that it's okay to be wrong all the time, but it is okay once in a while!
