National Physical Therapy Month

Last week we told you that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. October is also National Physical Therapy Month. Our intent is to not outshine Breast Cancer Awareness, but for you to learn what PT is and can do for you.

What is Physical Therapy?

Most people consider physical therapy to be the place you go after you have a surgery or were in a car accident. It is so much more than that.

Physical Therapists are movement experts. You can go to a physical therapist to tweak your form with anything from your tennis serve to your running mechanics. Regular check-ups with your physical therapist can find some movement problems that may make you susceptible to injury. You can get overall wellness advice and pointers from a physical therapist.

What are the Benefits of Physical Therapy?

Besides the benefit of recovery from an injury, physical therapy can save you time and money. Healthcare system studies have shown that when you see a physical therapist first, you get better faster, avoid unnecessary medications, and avoid surgeries.

Doesn't that sound great? Do you want to deal with all that time.

For a majority of clients that go to physical therapy first, they avoid x-rays and MRIs. Both of which are expensive (even with insurance). With recent studies on knees, backs, and shoulders, people can have positive MRIs but no issues with their lives. Who wants to get a positive MRI and then go down the road of surgery if it isn't necessary? And yes, sometimes surgery is necessary, but not often.

What Do You Do at Physical Therapy?

Your appointment at physical therapy will be different than anyone else's. That is due to you being a unique individual. Some guidelines will be similar. You will have a thorough evaluation to assess and determine a plan that is right for you. After the evaluation and assessment, you will have some hands on treatment, corrective exercises, strengthening exercises, and movement modifications just for you, your body, and your goals.

The experience at BodyFixPT and Performance adds another unique aspect. We come to you. You don't have to worry about traffic or parking. We will come to your home or business for your treatment. If you are fearful of COVID-19, we also offer telehealth. We encourage you to maintain your participation as much as possible in your activities and will help provide you with ways to scale or modify what you are currently doing so you can continue to participate.
