The Importance of Your Big Toe

Your big toe is important. It does a bunch of stuff that you might not even be aware of. Sometimes it can hurt. Here is some fun things about your big toe.

Your Big Toe

Your big toe in medical terms is called the Great Toe. It helps your foot grab the ground. where it meets the rest of your foot is a prime area for pushing off of the ground. This is important for you to walk or run, jump and land.

Your big toe is the leader of the other toes. It can lead them in a motion, or it can move by itself.

With all that it does, there are some big toe basics that you should understand.

What Your Big Toe Should Be Able To Do

If you sit with your feet together (like a butterfly stretch) and you move your big toes away from you, the angle should be 90 degrees (or a little more). If you have less, you may be at risk for a condition called Hallux Rigidus.

If you sit with your foot flat on the ground, you should be able to lift up your big toe, and only your big toe (this can be hard if you have foot issues). But keep working at it.

Your big toe should be able to press into the ground while you balance on one leg. If you are on an uneven surface, your big toe should start to wrap around it (like the picture above).

What If You Can't Do These Things

It's okay. But you should start to work on them while you're reading this. Here are a few exercises for your big toe that you can start working on.

Remember that this is not medical advice. This is just to help you start to get your big toe moving. If you want more help with your big toe, schedule a free screening in person (limited area) or online by emailing info@bodyfixpt.com
