What is Extrinsic Motivation?

Last week's Wellness Wednesday blog post was about intrinsic motivation. To follow up, this week you can learn about extrinsic motivation. There are differences, but the important thing to note is that both types of motivation can serve you well in attaining your goals.

Extrinsic Motivation

Extrinsic motivation refers to you being able to get something in return for completing a task, job, or athletic feat. It is when you are motivated by something other than your own self fulfilment. A lot of you can be, and are, motivated with both intrinsic and extrinsic rewards.

With extrinsic motivation, the eye is on the prize. There does not have to be a feeling of pleasure or self satisfaction (but there can be).

With extrinsic motivation your goal is focused more on the outcome than on the actual task at hand.

Examples of Extrinsic Rewards

Cash Money

Trophies

Recognition

Titles

Free Vacations

Increased Social Standing

Keeping Someone Happy

Winning

Raises

Not All Bad

These things are not all bad. Some are good. Your reasons for wanting the intrinsic rewards may be for good reasons. You may want a raise to help support your family. You may want recognition because you believe your work actually helps people. You may even find enjoyment in keeping, or making, someone else happy.

A lot of you are motivated by extrinsic factors, and that is okay. Sometimes you may need to take a break and decide if the pain of the task is worth the reward of the task!
