You Should Cool Down

A lot of you exercise. You exercise vigorously. Even if you don't you should read this. This will address the importance of doing some cool down exercise(s) after you work out.

What Is a Cool Down?

A cool down is exercise after you exercise. That sounds awkward, but it is true. After you have a bout of exercise (running, crossfit, lifting weights, etc.) it is important to keep moving. You don't want to just head to your car or sit on the couch. The rest of this post will explain why it is important.

A cool down can be anything you want, the important thing is too keep moving. You can walk, jog, lift, bike, etc. When you choose a cool down, you will want to use the muscles that you just were working out. So if you went for a long run, you may want to walk. If you did some Orange Theory you may want to do some squats. What you choose is up to you, but it should help you cool down.

The Benefits of a Cool Down

There are many benefits to a cool down. They will all help you feel better after your workout.

  1. Regulate/Normalize Heart Rate - By doing a cool down, you let your heart rate return to your normal level. This can be done over the course of 5-15 minutes.

  2. Flush Out Chemicals - By continuing to move after a workout, you can flush out any chemicals that have built up to help decrease inflammation.

  3. Catch Your Breath - It is better for your lungs to slow down gradually than to just stop. You will help to normalize your blood flow and oxygenation

  4. Avoid Getting Tight - If you just stop moving, muscles can tighten up and cramp.

  5. Be Social - You can move at a level that you can talk at and get to know the people you workout with.

  6. Work Your Weaknesses - You can take the time to do some work on something you struggle with.

  7. More Benefit From Stretching - Once your blood is flowing and your heart rate is up, you will get more benefit from your stretches!
